Which Shower Curtain Material Should You Choose – Plastic or Polyester?

Few people choose their shower curtain based on the material. Most, quite rightly, choose on size, colour and / or design above anything else. That said, it IS worth considering the material as there are pros and cons to each.

Here at Back2BATH we stock two kinds – polyester and EVA plastic. Both come in a variety of designs but which should you choose for your bathroom?

100% Polyester Shower Curtains

Shower curtains made from polyester are extremely common and you will find them in most department and bathroom stores. The reason for this is their many benefits and relatively few downsides.

The benefits you get from polyester shower curtains include:

  • Reasonably priced compared to natural fabric shower curtains
  • Available in an endless array of colours, patterns and designs
  • Waterproof
  • Resistant to mould and mildew
  • Do not crease
  • Do not shrink
  • Easy to recycle
  • Non-flammable
  • Quick drying

The only real downside to 100% polyester shower curtains in some people’s view is that as they are man made they’re not particularly eco-friendly.

Plastic Shower Curtains (EVA/PEVA)

If you’re looking for a plastic shower curtain (or vinyl shower curtain as they are sometimes called) then you will be faced with a choice between EVA and PEVA. The former stands for ethylene vinyl acetate, the latter polyethylene vinyl acetate – the difference between the two from a consumer point of view is negligible and you are fine to choose either. Both offer the following benefits:

  • Extremely low toxicity (especially compared to PVC shower curtains)
  • Available in clear and / or opaque which doesn’t fade with time
  • Available in a variety of designs
  • Extremely durable and long lasting
  • Not prone to mould or mildew
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Relatively thick material but soft to the touch
  • Can be used as shower curtain liners if required (eg, with a natural fabric curtain)

Where vinyl or plastic shower curtains suffer is that they are much easier to tear than polyester so you should ALWAYS purchase plastic curtains with reinforced eyelets.

We would certainly not recommend one material over the other – except to say you should never choose PVC! – as it depends on your own tastes and requirements. Thankfully, at Back2BATH you have the choice and we invite you to browse our extensive range of shower curtains right now.
